No Authority Required

 To a seeker, hearing so many different takes on nonduality can feel confusing... who’s actually right, who can be trusted, who has the authority to speak on it... who indeed?

Nonduality has never been authority based. It isn’t like medicine or law, where someone earns a credential and speaks with institutional authority. It isn’t a field where expertise is granted by a board or validated through exams, nor is it even something held by a person. It’s simply a pointing to what’s already here, and anyone can look, that’s the flow of it. One person sees something obvious, and they point it out, another checks their own experience to see if it’s so… nothing more complicated than that.

The mind likes to imagine hierarchies and special milestones, wanting to believe there are experts who possess some rare insight, people who have climbed a ladder and now stand at the top. Nonduality doesn’t work that way… there’s no ladder, no top, no possession. The clarity doesn’t sit inside a person like cultivated knowledge, it isn’t earned, awarded, or bestowed… it’s simply recognized, and once recognized, it’s obvious. The pointing is just a reminder, not a transmission of something someone owns.

It’s just a sharing… Nisargadatta pointed it out to Sailor Bob, who pointed it out to John Wheeler, and so on, no big thing. No one in that line held a title, no one claimed mastery, and no one was setting up a special club. It was just one person saying, “Look here,” and the other person looking. Wheeler didn't give me anything, he just pointed to that which is prior to concepts, saying “Look in your own direct experience.”

That’s really the only gauge there is… whether what’s pointed to holds up when you look. No belief required, no trust in the pointer needed… it isn’t a matter of faith in anyone at all. The looking either confirms it or it doesn’t, right there in your own experience, with nothing borrowed and nothing taken on someone else’s word.

When someone genuinely shares this, they’re not claiming status or spiritual rank… just saying, “Look directly.” That’s the whole thing… look at your own experience, see whether the sense of a separate self stands on its own or whether it’s just a habit of thoughts, a collection of concepts. See whether awareness is something you produce or something that’s already present, see whether immediacy requires effort or whether it’s here before effort. No one can do that looking for you, and the looking itself is its own certainty.

Nonduality stays clean when it stays simple… one person points, another looks. The clarity is in the looking, not in the pointer. The pointer is just a nudge, a reminder, a direction. It’s just expression happening, and expression doesn’t need permission to happen. It doesn’t need approval. It doesn’t need to be defended or justified. It simply moves the way it moves, open and available to anyone who cares to look.
